What is Yoga according
to Swami Sivananda?
(An enlightened spiritual master whose selected techniques and approaches are featured in our teachings)
Swami Sivananda is one of the most prominent spiritual teachers of the 20th century.
His understanding of Yoga is comprehensive and significantly transcends the modern Western
perception, which is often reduced to mere physical exercise.
The Definition
of Authentic Yoga
Authentic Yoga is not just a series of stretching exercises, but an integral system of self-discipline and spiritual development.
The word itself originates from the root "yuj," which means "to unite."
Sivananda defines Yoga as the unification of the individual soul (Jīvātmā) with the supreme consciousness (Paramātmā).
It is a state of complete stillness of the mind, the goal of which is liberation (Mokṣa) and the realization of our True Self (Ātman).

What is the difference between original, authentic Yoga and today's modern Yoga?
The fundamental difference lies in the very goal and approach.
It focuses almost exclusively on the physical body through poses (Āsana). Its goals are usually flexibility, body shaping, and stress relief. However, it often neglects deeper philosophy, ethical rules,
and the spiritual dimension.
Here, Āsana forms only a small fraction of the overall practice. It primarily serves to keep the body vital and capable of remaining for long hours in meditation (Dhyāna). The body is perceived as a temple—a tool for spiritual practice (Sādhana), not an end in itself. Without an ethical foundation and deep devotion, physical practice remains mere gymnastics according to Sivananda.
Sivananda taught the so-called "Yoga of Synthesis" because he believed that every individual needs to harmoniously develop the head, heart, and hand. Authentic practice must therefore include the attributes described below.
Karma Yoga: The Yoga of selfless service, aimed at purifying the heart from selfishness (Ahaṃkāra).
Bhakti Yoga: The Yoga of devotion and pure love for a higher principle.
Rāja Yoga: The Yoga of mind control. It includes not only poses (Āsana) and breathing techniques (Prāṇāyāma), but especially deep concentration (Dhāraṇā) and meditation (Dhyāna).
Jñāna Yoga: The Yoga of wisdom and self-inquiry, utilizing discernment (Viveka) between the permanent and the transient.
Ethical Foundation: Every practice must stand on firm pillars of morality—Yama (e.g., non-violence, truthfulness) and Niyama (e.g., purity, contentment). Without this moral anchoring, true spiritual progress is impossible.
